Visitor Guidelines

Adhering to the following guidelines will help visitors remain safe and comfortable while visiting the Ligon Outdoor Center property. 

Cancellation

  • In the event that you need to cancel your visit to Ligon, please contact us at least 24 hours in advance.
  • If your visit is on a “Snow Day”, please contact Ranger Jason as soon as possible to reschedule.

Clothing and Footwear

  • Dress appropriately for the weather - warm clothing in the winter months, cool clothing and sun protection in the warmer months.
  • During the winter, students should have boots, hats, gloves, and coats. Classrooms will be heated for your visit but dress warmly for your walk.
  • Sturdy shoes (hiking boots, comfortable walking shoes, and sneakers) with socks are appropriate.
  • Open-toed footwear should never be worn at Ligon. 

First Aid and Medical Emergencies

  • Group leaders should bring a basic First Aid Kit, insect repellent, emergency medications, and sunscreen with them to Ligon Outdoor Center.
  • In case of medical emergency, call 911 first then contact Ranger Bentley at (810) 560-2187.

  • To minimize your impact on the environment, plan ahead and prepare with these Leave No Trace tips.

Meals

There are no kitchen facilities at Ligon, with the exception of grills. If you are planning to have a meal at Ligon during your visit, here are some helpful tips:

  • You must bring your own food. 
  • If bringing food that needs to be kept cold, bring your own cooler(s).
  • Do not bring glass containers.
  • Lunch and snacks should be eaten in designated areas only.

Property Use

  • No swimming.
  • Do not feed or remove animals or plants from the property.
  • Certain off-trail areas at Ligon are prone to Poison Ivy and Sumac so visitors should remain on the roads and trails while at Ligon. 
  • Put borrowed resource materials back where they belong
  • Trash containers are provided in each building, on the roads, and on the trails.
  • In case of property emergency, contact Ranger Bentley at (810) 560-2187.

Weather

  • Most programs go on as planned, regardless of weather.
  • If the Genesee Intermediate School District is closed due to inclement weather, the Ligon Outdoor Center will also be closed.
  • If you choose to cancel your trip due to weather conditions, contact Ranger Bentley at (810) 560-2187.
