What type of clothing should I wear? While weather should certainly be the primary determining factor on dress (shorts vs. pants, long-sleeved shirt vs. jacket and gloves), keeping exposed parts of the body to a minimum and wearing light-colored clothing will reduce mosquito and other insect bites.
If you are planning on hiking all 6.5 miles of Ligon's hiking trails, you should consider wearing sturdy hiking boots. Most visitors will find comfortable walking shoes/sneakers with socks acceptable (no open-toed shoes/sandals).
Because current programs offered at Ligon are free, and the curio shop is not yet open in which to buy souvenirs, there is little need to bring money along.
Ligon is an outdoor education facility. We periodically test mosquitoes
and have identified no West Nile Virus carriers. Various strengths of Deet
mosquito repellent and liquid garlic spray are provided to visitors upon
request. Kits are available for emergencies.
Visitors with severe allergies, health issues or other special needs should contact Ranger Jason at (810) 591-4200 prior to visiting. Visitors may want to protect themselves with netting that will be provided on request. Certain off-trail areas of Ligon are also prone to growths of Poison Ivy and Sumac.
Almost all programs and activities at Ligon are designed to be outdoors and are weather-dependent. Make sure that you have provided the center Ranger with a contact number and know the number at Ligon (810-591-4200) so that you can be contacted if weather alters your plans.
